Shipping Ports:

Port Iquique, Port Arica, Port Valparaiso, Port Lirquén and Port San Antonio are the ports of the country.

Age Restriction:

The import regulation states that vehicles should not be more than 5 years from manufacture date.

Left/Right Hand Drive:

Both Left and Right Hand Drive vehicles are allowed to be imported in the country. Mainly left-hand drive vehicles are imported.

Inspection

Inspection is not needed for importing a vehicle in Chile. It might be needed for re-exporting.

Documents Required:

To import a vehicle in Chile the importer must be of chilean nationality, having remained abroad for over one year without dissolution of continuity. The duties to be paid vary according to the capacity of the motor (in cc). Two additional surcharges are imposed on automobiles, including locally assembled vehicles and single unit imports:

  • The engine size tax applied to vehicles with engines of over 1500 cc; and
  • An 85percent luxury tax charged on the CIF value in excess of $16,818.03. Under the US/Chile FTA the corresponding tax rate is 63.75percent on a minimum value of US$19,318.03 for each qualified vehicle as of January 1, 2004, but will be reduced progressively.

Import Documents:

Commercial Invoices must accompany all non document shipments. Invoices must be numbered, printed on company letterhead with an itemized list of contents, true FOB value of goods, signed and stamped by the shipper. Pro Forma invoices are acceptable as exceptions by Chilean Customs as valid documents for clearance.


Consignees Tax Identification Number (RUT) is required for shipments entering Chile and must be included on the Air Waybill and Commercial Invoice for all non-document shipments. If the RUT number is not included, additional clearance delays may occur.

 

 

Import Licenses all imports require a license, but, according to legislation governing the Central Bank since 1990, import licenses are granted as a routine procedure for nearly all goods. Licensing requirements are maintained largely as a statistical gathering mechanism, not as a control. More rigorous licensing procedures apply for pharmaceuticals and weapons.

Customs Valuation:

Chilean customs valuation uses the normal value of merchandise, without special discounts, plus freight and insurance (CIF). Used goods are valued by the customs service according to the current new value of similar merchandise, discounting 10percent per year of use, up to a 70percent discount.”]
